Sony UBP X700U 4K Ultra HD Blu ray Player with Dolby Vision and Dual HDMI

Overview

The Sony UBP-X700U is a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player built for people who still want the picture and sound quality that physical media delivers, playing 4K UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, CD, and SACD discs with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support.

Dual HDMI outputs separate video and audio, so you can send a clean video signal straight to your TV while routing a discrete audio stream to your AV receiver for full Dolby Atmos or DTS:X bitstream processing.

Built-in Wi-Fi and support for Hi-Res Audio formats like DSD and FLAC round it out, so it works equally well as a disc player and a network media player for your music library.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

We recommend the UBP-X700U for anyone with an existing Blu-ray or 4K UHD disc collection who wants better picture quality than streaming can offer, and the dual HDMI outputs make it an easy fit alongside an AV receiver that doesn't support the latest HDMI passthrough features.

Why the Sony UBP-X700U Stands Out

4K Ultra HD Playback with Dolby Vision

Native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support delivers the full dynamic range and detail these discs are mastered with.

Dual HDMI Output Separation

Two HDMI outputs let you send video directly to your TV while routing a separate audio HDMI feed to your AV receiver, simplifying setup with older or budget receivers.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Bitstream Output

The player passes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X bitstreams to a compatible AV receiver, and decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS internally in 7.1 channels.

Certified Hi-Res Audio Playback

Certified Hi-Res Audio support, including DSD and FLAC playback, means the UBP-X700U doubles as a capable network and USB music player, not just a disc player.

4K Upscaling for Blu-ray and DVD

Built-in 4K upscaling (up to 60p) with 12-bit Deep Colour sharpens standard Blu-ray and DVD content on a 4K display.

Built-In Wi-Fi with Screen Mirroring

Built-in Wi-Fi with Miracast screen mirroring lets you cast content from a compatible mobile device directly to your TV through the player.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The disc collector: Someone with an existing 4K UHD or Blu-ray collection who wants the best possible picture and sound from physical media.
  • The AV receiver owner: Someone who wants dual HDMI outputs to simplify routing video and audio separately to a TV and receiver.
  • The hi-res music listener: Someone who wants a single device that plays discs, USB drives, and network audio in Hi-Res formats.

How It Compares

The UBP-X700U is Sony's mid-range 4K Blu-ray player, adding dual HDMI outputs and Wi-Fi that its more basic single-HDMI competitors typically leave out. Choose it when you want a dedicated disc player with the flexibility to route audio separately to an AV receiver.

Sony UBP X700U 4K Ultra HD Blu ray Player with Dolby Vision and Dual HDMI FAQs

Does the UBP-X700U support Dolby Vision and HDR10?

Yes. The player supports Dolby Vision and HDR10 for compatible discs and displays; Dolby Vision support was provided via firmware. For best results, ensure your TV supports Dolby Vision and that the player firmware is up to date.

What are the two HDMI outputs for and how should I use them?

The dual HDMI outputs separate VIDEO and AUDIO routing — one HDMI output typically goes to the TV (video) while the other goes to an AV receiver (audio). This lets you route video directly to your TV while sending a discrete audio stream to an AVR for processing.

What file formats and network/USB playback does it support?

The UBP-X700U supports a broad set of audio and video files (FLAC, ALAC, WAV, DSD/DSF/DFF, AAC, MP3 and common video containers). It can play media from a USB drive and over a home network/server, but DRM-protected files and some encoded files may not play.

Can the UBP-X700U pass Dolby Atmos to my AV receiver and will it decode Atmos itself?

It will pass Dolby Atmos bitstreams to a compatible AV receiver (bitstream out). The player also decodes Dolby TrueHD internally (7.1ch). If you want object audio (Atmos) to be decoded you’ll generally pass the Atmos bitstream to your AVR that supports Atmos.
