Pro-Ject Audio Record Box E Phono Pre-Amp with Extra USB Output

Overview

The Pro-Ject Record Box E is a phono preamplifier that does two jobs at once: it amplifies and RIAA-equalizes the signal from your turntable's cartridge for a standard amplifier or receiver, and it digitizes that same signal to your computer over USB. It works with both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, selected via a rear-panel switch.

A built-in Burr-Brown PCM2904 16-bit Delta-Sigma converter handles the analog-to-digital conversion, and the connection is driverless — Windows, Mac OS, and Linux all recognize it automatically. Low-noise SMD circuitry and internal metal shielding keep the signal clean, and an outboard 18V/500mA DC power supply keeps the transformer's electrical noise away from the sensitive phono stage.

Gold-plated RCA connections handle input and output, and at just 120mm wide, the Record Box E tucks in easily next to a turntable or inside a media cabinet. It's available in Black or White.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The USB output tops out at 16-bit/44.1-48kHz, which is genuine CD-quality archiving but not a high-resolution capture — fine for backing up a record collection or editing out pops and clicks, but not what a hi-res-focused listener should expect. Also worth knowing: gain isn't continuously adjustable, it's fixed at 40dB for MM and 60dB for MC and selected via the rear switch, so make sure that switch matches your cartridge type before you start listening.

Why the Record Box E Stands Out

Burr-Brown PCM2904 A/D Converter

A 16-bit Delta-Sigma converter handles the analog-to-digital conversion for USB archiving.

MM & MC Switchable Gain

Fixed 40dB (MM) or 60dB (MC) gain, selected with a simple rear-panel switch.

Driverless USB Digitizing

Automatically recognized by Windows, Mac OS, and Linux with no additional drivers to install.

Low-Noise SMD Circuitry with Internal Shielding

Keeps the noise floor down to 94dB (MM) / 75dB (MC), A-weighted.

Outboard 18V DC Power Supply

Keeps the power transformer's electrical noise away from the delicate phono signal.

Gold-Plated RCA Connections

A secure, corrosion-resistant signal path for both input and output.

Compact Footprint

120 x 32 x 100mm (115mm with sockets), small enough to sit right next to the turntable.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • Vinyl Archivists: Anyone who wants to digitize a record collection over USB for portable or backup listening.
  • MM and MC Cartridge Owners: A switchable phono stage that works with either cartridge type.
  • Space-Constrained Setups: A compact footprint that fits close to the turntable or inside a media cabinet.

How It Compares

Pro-Ject's Phono Box MM covers straightforward MM-cartridge amplification at a lower price, without USB output or MC support. The Record Box E builds on that with MC cartridge compatibility, a Burr-Brown A/D converter, and USB digitizing, making it the better choice if you want to archive your vinyl or run a moving coil cartridge.

Pro-Ject Audio Record Box E Phono Pre-Amp with Extra USB Output FAQs

What is the Pro-Ject Record Box E, and what does it do?

The Pro-Ject Record Box E is a phono preamplifier designed to amplify the signal from a turntable's cartridge to a level suitable for standard audio equipment. It features a built-in analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a USB output, allowing users to digitize vinyl records for storage or editing on a computer.

How does the Pro-Ject Record Box E compare to built-in preamps in turntables?

A standalone preamp like the Record Box E generally provides more headroom and a cleaner phono stage than the basic built-in preamps found on entry-level turntables, and it adds USB output for digitizing vinyl that a built-in preamp doesn't offer.

Is the Pro-Ject Record Box E suitable for beginners?

Yes, the Pro-Ject Record Box E is user-friendly and suitable for beginners. Its plug-and-play setup allows users to connect their turntable and start digitizing vinyl records with minimal effort.

What are the limitations of the Pro-Ject Record Box E's USB output?

The USB output of the Pro-Ject Record Box E supports a maximum resolution of 16-bit/48kHz. While this is sufficient for casual listening and archiving, it may not meet the needs of audiophiles seeking higher-resolution audio.
