Klipsch R-40M Bookshelf Speaker - Pair
Overview
Not every room has space for full-size tower speakers, but that shouldn't mean settling for thin, compressed sound. The Klipsch R-40M packs genuine hi-fi performance into a compact bookshelf cabinet.
The R-40M pairs a 1" aluminum Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) tweeter with a 90° x 90° Tractrix horn for crisp, low-distortion highs, and a 4" spun-copper Thermoformed Crystalline Polymer (TCP) woofer for accurate midrange and bass. A Tractrix port adds low-end output beyond what the compact bass-reflex enclosure could deliver on its own.
The reinforced MDF cabinet is finished in scratch-resistant textured wood grain vinyl, with hidden fasteners and a low-profile magnetic grille for a clean look. Single gold-plated binding posts per speaker keep hookup simple.
Simcoe Audio Video Insight
For Central Ontario clients working with tighter rooms, condos, or secondary systems, the R-40M's horn-loaded tweeter is the detail that matters most — it controls dispersion instead of just radiating outward, so detail holds up even if you're not sitting dead-centre. Give the port a couple of feet of clearance from the rear wall for the tightest bass.

Buyer's Guide
Who It's For
- The Space-Conscious Listener: wants real hi-fi sound without full-size tower speakers.
- The Home Theater Builder: works well as front or surround channels in a Klipsch Reference system.
- The Desktop or Near-Field Listener: compact enough for close-range music listening.
How It Compares
The R-40M is the entry point into Klipsch's Reference bookshelf lineup, sitting below the larger-driver R-50M. Both share the same TCP woofer and Tractrix horn tweeter design, but the R-50M's larger woofer extends bass further and handles more power for bigger rooms. For a compact secondary system or tight space, the R-40M is the right-sized choice; for a primary system in a larger room, the R-50M is worth the step up.
