FiiO R9 Flagship Digital Media Streamer
Overview
The FiiO R9 is an all-in-one desktop streamer, DAC, headphone amplifier and preamp, built around two ESS ES9038PRO DACs and an 8-channel THX AAA 788+ amplifier, with a 6-inch Android touchscreen. It's for listeners who want one box at the centre of a desk or listening room that streams over the network, takes TV and digital sources, drives demanding headphones and feeds powered speakers or an amp.
Each ES9038PRO handles one channel, and the THX amp stage delivers up to 7300mW per channel into 32 ohms from the 4.4mm and XLR4 balanced outputs and 2100mW from the 6.35mm output in ultra high gain, with balanced SNR of 126dB. XLR3 and RCA line outputs give 4.8Vrms and 2.4Vrms for active speakers or an amplifier. It runs from AC mains or a 15V/3A DC supply, selectable with a switch, and has a ground switch.
A Snapdragon 660 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage runs Android, and the R9 supports Roon Ready, AirPlay and DLNA over Wi-Fi or 100Mbps Ethernet. HDMI input and HDMI ARC let it take sound from a disc player, set-top box or TV, and optical and coaxial inputs and outputs handle other digital gear. USB and local playback reach 768kHz/32-bit and native DSD512, Bluetooth 5.1 receives LDAC and aptX Adaptive, and an RM3 Bluetooth remote is included.

Use the R9's HDMI ARC to run TV sound through it, and the XLR3 or RCA line outputs to feed powered speakers, so one unit handles both headphones and speakers in a desk or living-room setup. For Roon and high-resolution streaming, the 100Mbps Ethernet port is the steadiest connection. Start on a lower gain with sensitive headphones, since ultra high gain is built for the most demanding loads.
