Bowers & Wilkins 802 D4 Floor Standing Speakers - (Pair)

Overview

If you want the character of the flagship 800 Series Diamond floorstander in a slightly smaller cabinet, the 802 D4 is built for exactly that.

The Bowers & Wilkins 802 D4 is a 3-way vented-box floor-standing loudspeaker with a 25mm Diamond dome tweeter, a 150mm Continuum cone FST midrange and two 200mm Aerofoil cone bass units. Bowers & Wilkins says it is built to similar proportions as the flagship 801 D4 and uses the same Turbine Head enclosure for its midrange drive unit.

Frequency response is 17Hz to 28kHz (±3dB) with 90dB sensitivity and an 8Ω nominal impedance (3.0Ω minimum). Bowers & Wilkins recommends 50W to 500W into 8Ω on unclipped programme.

Why the Bowers & Wilkins 802 D4 Stands Out

Turbine Head Midrange Enclosure

The same all-aluminium Turbine Head enclosure as the 801 D4 houses the Continuum midrange cone, decoupled from both the bass enclosure and the tweeter body.

Biomimetic Suspension

Bowers & Wilkins says this suspension greatly reduces the unwanted air pressure and coloration that a traditional fabric spider can generate.

Diamond Dome Tweeter

A 25mm Diamond dome in a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing handles the high frequencies up to 35kHz.

Twin Aerofoil Bass Units

Two 200mm (8 in) Aerofoil cone bass units and a Flowport deliver a frequency response of 17Hz to 28kHz (±3dB).

Flagship Proportions

Built to similar proportions as the 801 D4, at 1218mm tall, 413mm wide and 602mm deep.

Practical Amplifier Range

Rated at 90dB sensitivity with a recommended 50W to 500W into 8Ω.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Flagship-Minded Listener: wants the 801 D4 approach and its Turbine Head midrange in a somewhat smaller, more affordable speaker.
  • The Large-Room Owner: has room for a 1218mm tall, 88.10kg floorstander with a frequency range reaching down to 14Hz.
  • The Powerful-Amplifier Owner: runs an amplifier up to 500W into 8Ω.

How It Compares

The 801 D4 uses the same 25mm Diamond dome tweeter and 150mm Continuum cone FST midrange but has two 250mm Aerofoil bass units, a 1221mm tall cabinet and a recommended amplifier range of 50W to 1000W. Bowers & Wilkins describes the 802 D4 as offering much of the performance of the 801 D4 while being more affordable overall.
