Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 Floor Standing Speakers - (Pair)

Overview

The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 is the flagship of the 700 Series, a three-way floorstanding speaker that B&W describes as defining new standards for performance in its class. It combines a Decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter in a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing, a 6-inch Continuum cone FST midrange, and three 6.5-inch Aerofoil Profile bass cones.

The tweeter housing is milled from a single block of aluminium and decoupled from the cabinet, and the Carbon Dome raises the breakup threshold to 47kHz. Like every three-way 700 Series model, it uses a dedicated midrange that combines four B&W technologies: the Continuum cone, FST, Biomimetic Suspension, and midrange decoupling, which keeps interference from the bass drivers to a minimum. A downward-firing port configuration joins the trio of bass cones for deep, articulate bass.

B&W rates the 702 S3 at 46Hz to 28kHz (±3dB), with a -6dB range of 28Hz to 33kHz, 90dB sensitivity, and an 8-ohm nominal load, suited to amplifiers from 30W to 300W. Each speaker stands on a supplied plinth.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The 702 S3 is a big, heavy tower at 33.46 kg each, so it needs a solid, level floor. B&W includes a tommy bar and spanner with the 702 S3 for fitting the spike or rubber feet. Its terminals support bi-wiring or bi-amping once the links are removed, which suits a stereo room or the front stage of a home theatre.

Why the Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 Stands Out

Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top

An elongated housing milled from a single block of aluminium and decoupled from the cabinet, with longer tube-loading for a free, open top end.

Decoupled Carbon Dome Tweeter

Purpose-built for the 700 Series, B&W's Carbon Dome tweeter raises the breakup threshold to 47kHz for pinpoint imaging and detail.

Continuum Cone FST Midrange

A decoupled midrange with Biomimetic Suspension that avoids the abrupt transitions of conventional cones, for precise, transparent voices.

Three Aerofoil Profile Bass Cones

Developed with computer modelling, the variable-thickness Aerofoil cone adds stiffness where it matters for deep, dynamic bass.

Downward-Firing Port

A new downward-firing port configuration works with the three bass cones for deep, articulate low end.

Bi-Wire and Bi-Amp Terminals

Remove the terminal links to bi-wire or bi-amp; B&W notes bi-wiring can improve the resolution of low-level detail.

Plinth with Spike and Rubber Feet

Each tower stands on its supplied plinth, which B&W says must always be used, with spike or rubber feet.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Two-Channel Listener: Wants the flagship 700 Series tower as the centre of a stereo system.
  • The Home Theatre Builder: Wants front left and right towers for a large room.
  • The Large-Room Owner: Needs the bass output of three 6.5-inch drivers.

How It Compares

The 702 S3 tops the 700 Series with three Aerofoil bass cones and a downward-firing port. The 703 S3 shares the Tweeter-on-Top and Continuum FST midrange with two bass cones, and the 702 S3 Signature adds 800 Series Signature-derived refinements.
