Klipsch R-101SW 10" Subwoofer

Overview

Movie soundtracks and bass-heavy music both lose their impact without real low-end extension, and most TV or bookshelf speaker setups simply can't produce it. The Klipsch R-101SW adds that missing foundation to a home theater or stereo system.

The R-101SW is a 10" powered subwoofer built around a spun-copper thermoformed crystalline polymer (TCP) woofer, chosen for its light weight, minimal cone breakup, and low distortion at high output. An all-digital amplifier drives it with 150W of continuous power, and a rear-firing bass-reflex port extends low-frequency response down to 29.5Hz for real depth rather than just added volume.

A low-pass crossover (adjustable 40-160Hz) and a phase switch let you blend the sub in cleanly with your main speakers, and Line/LFE RCA inputs make it compatible with virtually any AV receiver. The reinforced 3/4" MDF cabinet is scratch-resistant with a textured wood grain vinyl finish, and a front-mounted LED indicator and low-profile grille keep the design clean.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

For clients in Central Ontario pairing the R-101SW with a Reference or Reference Premiere speaker system, dial in the crossover a little below your main speakers' rated low-frequency response rather than right at it — this avoids an obvious hand-off point where the sub "turns on" and keeps bass sounding like it's coming from one consistent source. The rear-firing port also means it needs a few inches of clearance from the wall to breathe properly.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Home Theater Builder: wants real low-end impact for movies without needing a huge subwoofer.
  • The Music Listener: wants bass that extends below what bookshelf or floor-standing speakers can reach on their own.
  • The Flexible Installer: needs a sub that works with any AV receiver via standard Line/LFE inputs.

How It Compares

The R-101SW is the smaller of Klipsch's two current Reference subwoofers, sitting below the R-121SW. Both share the same spun-copper TCP woofer design, all-digital amplifier, and bass-reflex cabinet, but the R-121SW steps up to a larger 12" driver for deeper, higher-output bass, while the R-101SW's 10" driver is the easier fit for a smaller room or a tighter budget. For most living rooms and home theaters, the R-101SW covers the bass duties; for a larger room or reference-level output, the R-121SW is the stronger choice.
