FiiO K7 Desktop DAC and Headphone Amplifier
Overview
The FiiO K7 is a desktop DAC and headphone amplifier built around dual AK4493SEQ DAC chips, one per channel, fed by an XMOS XUF208 USB decoder. A dual THX AAA 788+ amplifier stage delivers up to 2000mW into 32Ω balanced or 1220mW single-ended, with enough headroom to drive a 300Ω load to 560mW. The six-stage circuit keeps analog and digital sections truly balanced to reduce crosstalk, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 120dB (A-weighted). It accepts USB, optical, coaxial, and RCA inputs, and outputs through 6.35mm single-ended, 4.4mm balanced, and XLR-4 jacks, with three switchable modes for headphone, speaker, or DAC-only use.
Simcoe Audio Video Insight
Having three output modes — headphone, speaker, and DAC-only — on one unit means the K7 can sit at the centre of a desktop setup and switch roles as needed, rather than being locked into either a pure headphone amp or a preamp role.
- Dual AK4493SEQ DACs with a dual THX AAA 788+ amplifier
- Up to 2000mW balanced output into 32Ω
- USB, optical, coaxial, and RCA inputs with three output modes
Best for the FiiO K7: use the balanced 4.4mm or XLR-4 output with headphones that support it, since the balanced amplifier stage delivers meaningfully more power than the single-ended path.
More Details
Why It Wins
- Dual AK4493SEQ DACs: One DAC chip per channel for a fully differential signal path.
- Dual THX AAA 788+ Amplifier: The same amplifier architecture used in FiiO's K9 Pro.
- Three Output Modes: Switch between headphone, speaker, and DAC-only use from one unit.
What Makes It Different
A six-stage, truly balanced analog and digital circuit design is a more involved approach than a typical single-ended desktop DAC/amp, aimed at reducing crosstalk and noise throughout the signal path rather than just at the output stage.
Technical Highlights
- 120dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio: A-weighted, measured over USB audio class.
- 112-Step Volume Control: Fine-grained adjustment via ADC curve reconstruction.
- Two Hardware Gain Settings: Matches the amp to different headphone sensitivities.
Buyers Guide
Who This Is For
- The Desktop Audiophile: Wants a single unit that handles both DAC duties and serious headphone amplification.
- The Multi-Source User: Benefits from USB, optical, coaxial, and RCA inputs on one device.
- The High-Impedance Headphone Owner: The K7's power output comfortably drives demanding headphones.
Ideal Use Case
- Desktop Computer Audio: As a USB DAC and headphone amp for a PC or Mac.
- Home Audio Systems: Using the speaker output mode to feed an integrated amp or active speakers.
- Critical Headphone Listening: With the balanced 4.4mm or XLR-4 output.
What To Pair It With
- Full-Size Headphones: Including higher-impedance models, using the balanced output.
- A Computer or Digital Source: Via USB, optical, or coaxial input.
- Active Speakers or an Integrated Amp: Using the K7's speaker output mode.
Alternative Options
The K7 is a wired desktop DAC/amp without Bluetooth. If you want wireless input as well, FiiO also offers a K7 BT variant with Bluetooth 5.1 and LDAC/aptX support. For a resistor-ladder R-2R DAC design instead of chip-based conversion, FiiO's K11 R2R and K13 R2R, already in our lineup, are worth a look.
