FiiO D03K Optical Coaxial Digital-to-Analog Converter
Overview
The FiiO D03K is a compact digital-to-analog converter built to add clean analog output to a TV, computer, or car audio system. It accepts optical or coaxial digital input, selected via a switch on the unit, and converts it to analog RCA or 3.5mm output for connection to an external amplifier or powered speakers. Inside, an MS8416T digital audio receiver handles sampling rates from 32kHz to 192kHz, feeding an MS4344 DAC chip rated up to 192kHz/24-bit, with an SG358 dual-channel op-amp handling the analog output stage. The unibody aluminum alloy shell houses a red power indicator and a blue signal-lock indicator, and the D03K automatically mutes on non-PCM signals to protect connected equipment.
Simcoe Audio Video Insight
A lot of TVs and set-top boxes only output digital optical or coaxial audio, which most older stereo receivers and powered speakers can't accept directly. The D03K bridges that gap in a small aluminum housing, so you can add a TV or other digital source to an analog audio system without replacing any existing gear.
- Optical and coaxial digital inputs with a selector switch
- RCA and 3.5mm analog outputs
- Supports up to 192kHz/24-bit PCM decoding
Best for the FiiO D03K: use the coaxial input over optical when your source supports both, since a wired coaxial connection is generally less prone to interference over longer cable runs.
More Details
Why It Wins
- MS4344 DAC Chip: Handles digital-to-analog conversion up to 192kHz/24-bit.
- Dual Digital Inputs: Optical and coaxial inputs with a simple selector switch.
- Unibody Aluminum Construction: A compact, durable enclosure for a desk or entertainment centre.
What Makes It Different
Unlike a full desktop DAC/amp, the D03K is purpose-built as a simple, focused converter — there's no headphone jack or amplifier stage, just a clean path from digital optical or coaxial input to analog RCA or 3.5mm output.
Technical Highlights
- MS8416T Digital Receiver: Supports sampling rates from 32kHz to 192kHz.
- Auto-Muting Protection: Mutes output automatically when a non-PCM signal is detected.
- Signal Lock Indicator: A blue LED confirms a valid input signal is detected.
Buyers Guide
Who This Is For
- The TV and Home Theatre Owner: Needs to connect a digital-only TV output to an analog stereo system.
- The Car Audio Installer: Adding digital source compatibility to an analog car audio setup.
- The Computer User: Wants a simple, affordable DAC for optical or coaxial output from a PC.
Ideal Use Case
- TV to Stereo Bridging: Connecting a TV's optical output to an older analog receiver.
- Desktop Computer Audio: Adding a dedicated DAC stage ahead of powered speakers.
- Vehicle Audio Systems: Converting a digital source for use with car audio amplifiers.
What To Pair It With
- Powered Speakers or an External Amplifier: Using the RCA or 3.5mm analog output.
- A TV, Blu-ray Player, or Computer: Using either the optical or coaxial digital input.
- A USB Power Adapter: To power the unit, sold separately.
Alternative Options
The D03K is a focused, DAC-only converter with no headphone output. If you want digital-to-analog conversion combined with a full headphone amplifier stage instead, FiiO's K7 and K11 R2R, already in our lineup, add dedicated headphone outputs and gain controls.
