Bowers & Wilkins 801 D4 Signature Floor Standing Speakers - (Pair)

Overview

If you already know what a reference loudspeaker can do, the next step is hearing what happens when every part around the drive units is refined as well.

The Bowers & Wilkins 801 D4 Signature is an optimised version of the brand's flagship 801 D4: a 3-way vented-box floorstanding loudspeaker with a 25mm Diamond Dome tweeter in a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing, a 150mm Continuum cone FST midrange, and two 250mm Aerofoil Profile bass cones. The tweeter housing has an all-new grille, and the cabinet has an all-new aluminium top section for extra stiffness.

Frequency response runs from 15Hz to 28kHz (±3dB), sensitivity is 90dB, and nominal impedance is 8Ω with a 3.0Ω minimum. Bowers & Wilkins recommends 50W to 1,000W into 8Ω, so it suits serious amplification in a room with the space to use it.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

At 1,221mm tall and 100.6kg per speaker, the 801 D4 Signature is a placement and delivery project rather than a drop-in. Plan the floor, the access route and the amplifier before it arrives, and we are happy to go through the room and the system with you first.

Why the Bowers & Wilkins 801 D4 Signature Stands Out

Diamond Dome Tweeter

Low mass, high stiffness and outstanding accuracy, in a dome Bowers & Wilkins says it still has not bettered since introducing it fifteen years ago.

Optimised Tweeter Housing

The Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top has an elongated form, a longer tube-loading system and an all-new grille, aimed at freer, more open high frequencies.

Turbine Head Midrange

The Continuum cone FST midrange sits in an all-aluminium Turbine Head, decoupled from both the bass enclosure and the tweeter body.

Upgraded Crossover on Aluminium Spines

Upgraded rear-mounted crossovers sit on stiff aluminium spines that isolate sensitive capacitors from air pressure inside the cabinet and act as a heatsink.

Aluminium Top Section

An all-new, optimised aluminium top section adds stiffness and is the mounting point for the Leather by Connolly cabinet detailing.

Dual 250mm Aerofoil Bass

Two 250mm (10 in) Aerofoil Profile bass cones in a vented-box system with a Flowport, rated to 15Hz (±3dB).

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Flagship Perfectionist: wants the 801 D4 platform with the optimised details of the Signature version.
  • The Large-Room Owner: has the space, the floor and the amplification for a 100.6kg floorstander rated for up to 1,000W.
  • The Detail-Focused Buyer: values the upgraded crossover, the stiffer top section and the revised tweeter grille.

How It Compares

The 801 D4 Signature keeps the 801 D4's drive units, 3-way vented-box layout and cabinet dimensions, so the two match on frequency range and sensitivity. Bowers & Wilkins describes it as an optimised version of the 801 D4 and lists it with an all-new tweeter grille, upgraded rear-mounted crossovers on aluminium spines, and an all-new aluminium top section.
