Bowers & Wilkins 704 S3 Floor Standing Speakers - (Pair)

Overview

The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S3 is the slimmest floorstanding speaker B&W makes, a three-way 700 Series tower that B&W says still packs a mighty punch. It uses a Decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter, a decoupled 5-inch Continuum cone FST midrange, and two 5-inch Aerofoil Profile bass cones in a cabinet 165 mm (6.5 in) wide.

The Carbon Dome tweeter, purpose-built for the 700 Series, raises the breakup threshold to 47kHz. Like every three-way 700 Series model, it uses a dedicated midrange that combines four B&W technologies: the Continuum cone, FST, Biomimetic Suspension, and midrange decoupling, which keeps interference from the bass drivers to a minimum. The twin Aerofoil bass cones give the slim cabinet its extension and scale.

B&W rates the 704 S3 at 48Hz to 28kHz (±3dB), with a range of 43Hz to 33kHz, 88dB sensitivity, and an 8-ohm nominal load, suited to amplifiers from 30W to 150W. Each speaker stands on a supplied plinth.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The 704 S3 is the 700 Series tower for rooms where width is the limit: the cabinet is 165 mm wide and 252 mm with its plinth. If it has to sit close to a wall, the supplied two-piece foam plug lets you trim the bass. The terminals support bi-wiring or bi-amping once the links are removed.

Why the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S3 Stands Out

Slimmest B&W Floorstander

A cabinet just 165 mm (6.5 in) wide, B&W's slimmest floorstanding speaker.

Decoupled Carbon Dome Tweeter

Purpose-built for the 700 Series, B&W's Carbon Dome tweeter raises the breakup threshold to 47kHz for pinpoint imaging and detail.

Continuum Cone FST Midrange

A decoupled midrange with Biomimetic Suspension that avoids the abrupt transitions of conventional cones, for precise, transparent voices.

Two 5-Inch Aerofoil Profile Bass Cones

Developed with computer modelling, the variable-thickness Aerofoil cone adds stiffness where it matters for deep, dynamic bass.

Two-Piece Foam Plug

Fit the outer ring alone or the full plug to fine-tune bass when the speakers sit near a wall.

Bi-Wire and Bi-Amp Terminals

Remove the terminal links to bi-wire or bi-amp; B&W notes bi-wiring can improve the resolution of low-level detail.

Plinth with Spike and Rubber Feet

Each tower stands on its supplied plinth, which B&W says must always be used, with spike or rubber feet.
