Audeze CRBN2 Over-ear Headphones - Electrostatic Carbon Nanotube
Overview
The Audeze CRBN2 is an open-back electrostatic headphone built around a second-generation carbon nanotube driver film. Unlike Audeze's planar magnetic models, the CRBN2 uses a push-pull electrostatic driver and SLAM technology to deliver a powerful, physical bass response alongside a detailed, spacious soundstage. It requires a dedicated electrostatic amplifier with 580V Stax Pro Bias output — it will not work with a standard headphone amp.
Simcoe Audio Video Insight
Electrostatic headphones work differently than the planar and dynamic models most people are used to, and the CRBN2 needs its own amplifier to function at all. This isn't a headphone you add to an existing setup without checking compatibility first.
- Requires a 580V Stax Pro Bias electrostatic amplifier, sold separately
- Second-generation carbon nanotube driver film, developed in-house by Audeze
- SLAM technology adds physical bass response uncommon in electrostatic headphones
Best for the Audeze CRBN2: confirm you have, or plan to buy, a compatible 580V Pro Bias electrostatic amplifier before ordering — the attached 5-pin cable will not plug into a standard headphone amp.
More Details
Why It Wins
- Second-Generation Carbon Nanotube Driver: An ultra-thin polyimide film infused with carbon nanotubes, developed and made in-house by Audeze.
- SLAM Technology: Manages pressure across the diaphragm to add physical, well-controlled bass that's uncommon in electrostatic designs.
- Push-Pull Electrostatic Design: Drives the diaphragm from both sides for low distortion and precise detail retrieval.
What Makes It Different
Electrostatic headphones use an electrically charged diaphragm instead of a magnet-and-coil or planar driver, which is why they need a dedicated high-voltage amplifier rather than a standard headphone amp. This design allows for extremely low mass and fast movement, which is part of why electrostatic headphones are known for their detail and speed.
Technical Highlights
- 120mm x 90mm Electrostatic Driver: Delivers a 10Hz-40kHz frequency response with less than 0.1% THD at 90dB.
- 580V Stax Pro Bias Compatible: Works with electrostatic amplifiers from a range of brands that support the Stax Pro Bias standard.
- OCC Monocrystal Copper Cable: A 2.5m attached cable terminated in a 5-pin Pro Bias connector.
Buyers Guide
Who This Is For
- The Established Audiophile: Listeners who already own, or are ready to invest in, a dedicated electrostatic amplifier.
- The Detail-Focused Listener: Anyone chasing the speed and resolution electrostatic headphones are known for.
- The Long-Term Collector: Buyers building out a serious two-channel or headphone listening system over time.
Ideal Use Case
- Dedicated Listening Rooms: Paired with a proper electrostatic amplifier setup.
- Critical Listening and Mastering: Where detail retrieval and imaging matter most.
- Long-Term Reference Systems: For listeners who plan to build their setup around this headphone.
What To Pair It With
- A 580V Stax Pro Bias Electrostatic Amplifier: Required to power the CRBN2 — it will not run from a standard headphone amp.
- A Resolving DAC or Source: To feed the amplifier a clean signal worth amplifying.
- A Dedicated Listening Space: Since this is an open-back design built for quiet rooms.
Alternative Options
The CRBN2 is built for listeners ready to commit to a dedicated electrostatic amplifier setup. If you want Audeze's detail and soundstage without needing separate high-voltage amplification, the LCD-5s or LCD-3 are worth a look instead.
