FiiO FP3 Planar Driver In-Ear Monitors
Overview
The FiiO FP3 is a wired in-ear monitor built around a 14.5mm planar driver, the kind of driver usually found in full-size headphones. It's for listeners who want the fast, clean, detailed sound planar drivers are known for, in a light pair of earphones with a solid wood faceplate.
The FP3 uses FiiO's second-generation, self-developed planar driver with a diaphragm only 1μm thick. FiiO's patented dual coating lays aluminum on a PET film to improve conductivity and lower the power the driver needs, then titanium for rigidity and treble clarity. Ultra-fine 0.055mm traces, 486.5mm in total, pack more driving force into the magnetic field, and 14 N52 neodymium magnets (seven on each side) power the diaphragm. FiiO's patented F.T.B.S. Tesla valve acoustic structure, shared with the FD15, helps the planar driver deliver fuller bass.
Each earpiece weighs about 6.5g, with a high-precision 3D-printed front shell that's hand-polished and UV-coated. It's Hi-Res Audio certified by both JAS and CEA, and comes with a detachable 0.78mm 2-pin cable (4 strands, 392 silver-plated copper wires) with a gold-plated 3.5mm plug, an HB11 storage case, and treble and balanced ear tips.

The FP3 is a good way to try planar sound in an IEM without the bulk some planar earphones have. FiiO's aluminum-coated diaphragm is designed to keep power needs down, and at 36 ohms and 105dB/mW, it runs well from a dongle DAC or portable player. The treble tips come installed, but try the balanced tips too and use whichever gives you the best seal. The 2-pin connector makes it easy to swap cables later if you want a balanced 4.4mm option.
