Klipsch R-121SW 12" Subwoofer

Overview

Bigger rooms and bass-heavy movie scenes ask more of a subwoofer than most compact setups can deliver, and running out of headroom is the fastest way to lose the impact of a soundtrack. The Klipsch R-121SW is built to keep up.

The R-121SW is a 12" powered subwoofer built around a spun-copper thermoformed crystalline polymer (TCP) woofer that stays light and rigid even when it's working hard, keeping cone breakup and distortion low at high output. An all-digital amplifier drives it with 200W of continuous power (400W peak), and a rear-firing bass-reflex port extends response down to 28Hz.

A low-pass crossover, 0°/180° phase switch, and auto power-on let you blend the sub cleanly with your main speakers, and Line/LFE RCA inputs make it compatible with virtually any AV receiver. The MDF cabinet is finished in scratch-resistant textured wood grain vinyl, with a front-mounted LED indicator and low-profile grille.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

For Central Ontario clients with larger great rooms or dedicated theatres, the R-121SW's extra cone area over the 10" R-101SW means it reaches the same output with less strain, which usually translates to cleaner, more controlled bass at reference volume. As with any ported sub, give the rear-firing port a few inches of clearance from the wall.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Large-Room Home Theater Owner: needs more cone area and output than a smaller sub can provide.
  • The Reference System Owner: pairs naturally with Klipsch R-Series bookshelf, centre, and tower speakers.
  • The Action-Movie Fan: wants extra headroom for demanding low-frequency effects.

How It Compares

The R-121SW sits above the 10" R-101SW in Klipsch's Reference subwoofer line. Both share the same spun-copper TCP woofer design, all-digital amplifier, and bass-reflex cabinet, but the R-121SW's larger 12" driver and 200W amplifier extend response further (28Hz vs. 29.5Hz) and add headroom (118dB vs. 115dB max output). For a typical living room, the R-101SW is plenty; for a larger space or reference-level output, the R-121SW is the stronger choice.
