FiiO DM15 R2R Portable CD Player with R2R DAC

Overview

The FiiO DM15 R2R is a slim portable stereo CD player built around FiiO's own R2R resistor-ladder DAC, designed to recapture the warm, organic character of classic portable CD players with modern power and features. It plays CDs, works as a USB DAC for a computer or phone, sends music to wireless headphones over aptX Adaptive Bluetooth, and can rip CDs to WAV files.

The four-channel, fully differential 24-bit R2R DAC uses 192 precision thin-film resistors (48 per channel) with 0.1% accuracy. In desktop mode the 4.4mm balanced output reaches 1150mW per channel into 32 ohms, or 815mW in standard mode. There are separate 3.5mm and 4.4mm line outputs, plus coaxial and optical digital outputs, and the USB DAC input accepts PCM up to 384kHz/32bit and native DSD256.

A Qualcomm QCC3095 chip handles Bluetooth 5.4 transmission with aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, aptX, and SBC. A refined custom mechanism, an ESP switch, 8 EQ presets, three bass settings, and an included infrared remote round it out. The 4700mAh battery runs about 7 hours on CD playback and charges in about 2 hours with PD fast charging. The aluminum body has a tempered glass lid and front panel.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The DM15 R2R is the CD player for listeners who want character as well as convenience. If it will spend most of its time on a desk, flip the D.MODE switch with power connected. It then runs without cycling the battery and unlocks the full 1150mW balanced output. The USB REC port is a handy way to back up favourite discs to WAV. Note that the included remote needs a battery, which isn't supplied.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The R2R Enthusiast: Wants resistor-ladder DAC sound from a CD player.
  • The CD Archivist: Wants to rip a disc collection to WAV files.
  • The High-Power Listener: Runs demanding headphones from the 4.4mm balanced output.

How It Compares

Compared with FiiO's DM13 BT, the DM15 R2R moves to an R2R resistor-ladder DAC, adds aptX Adaptive, a USB DAC input, a larger 4700mAh battery with PD fast charging, and up to 1150mW balanced in desktop mode, in a slimmer body.

FiiO DM15 R2R Portable CD Player with R2R DAC FAQs

What makes the DM15 R2R's DAC different?

It uses FiiO's own fully differential 24-bit R2R resistor-ladder DAC with 192 precision resistors, rather than a conventional DAC chip, for a warm, analog-style sound.

Does it always deliver 1150mW?

No. The 1150mW per channel (32 ohms) figure is in desktop mode on external power. In standard mode, the balanced output delivers up to 815mW per channel.

Can it rip CDs?

Yes. It rips CDs to WAV files on a USB storage device through the USB REC port.

How long does the battery last?

About 7 hours of CD playback, or about 10.5 to 11 hours as a USB DAC. It charges in about 2 hours with a PD3.0 charger.
