FiiO BTR15 Portable Bluetooth DAC and Headphone Amplifier

Overview

The FiiO BTR15 is a portable Bluetooth DAC and headphone amplifier that also works as a high-resolution USB DAC for your computer or phone. One button switches between PC, Bluetooth, and phone modes, so the same small device can sit on your desk with a laptop, stream wirelessly from your phone, or plug into your phone as a dongle.

Two ESS ES9219MQ DACs, a Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth chip, and an XMOS XU316 USB receiver form the core. Bluetooth 5.1 covers LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, aptX LL, AAC, and SBC, while USB handles PCM up to 384kHz/32bit, DSD256, and full MQA decoding. An independent amp power supply lets the 4.4mm balanced output reach 340mW per channel into 32 ohms, and the 3.5mm output is wired in parallel for up to 125mW.

A 0.96-inch OLED display, curved glass front and back, and an aluminum frame make it easy to read and comfortable to hold. The FiiO Control app adds a global parametric EQ, and a built-in mic handles calls. Battery life is about 8 hours over Bluetooth, and FiiO added several battery-protection features to look after long-term battery health.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The BTR15 is a strong pick if you want one portable device that's a real USB DAC at your desk and a capable Bluetooth amp everywhere else. Use the 4.4mm output if your headphones or IEMs have a balanced cable. That's where the extra power is. In PC mode it draws power from the computer rather than its battery, which makes it a good everyday laptop DAC. For on-the-go use, the included back clip, or FiiO's optional MagClip magnetic kit, makes it easier to carry.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Desk and Commute Listener: Wants a laptop DAC that also works over Bluetooth.
  • The Balanced IEM Owner: Wants more power from a 4.4mm cable on the go.
  • The Hi-Res File Collector: Wants high sample rates and DSD over USB.

How It Compares

Compared with FiiO's BTR13, the BTR15 adds more balanced power, a high-resolution XMOS USB section (up to 384kHz/32bit and DSD256 versus 96kHz/16bit), and an OLED display with curved glass.
