Hegel D50 DAC

Overview

The Hegel D50, nicknamed "The Raven," is a dedicated digital-to-analog converter built around the latest DAC chip and more than two decades of Hegel's DAC design experience. Its minimalist black exterior hides meticulous circuit design work aimed at extracting the full potential of that chip, including three dedicated master clocks that reclock incoming signals for jitter-free, perfectly timed conversion.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

Power supply design is where the D50 really stands apart: two separate low-noise toroidal transformers, one dedicated to noisier digital processes and standby functions, the other reserved for the sensitive analog and digital components, each shielded in thick steel and placed away from sensitive electronics. The DAC chip itself sits elevated on its own board above the rest of the electronics to minimize noise and keep signal paths short.

Best for the Hegel D50: its automatic input sensing can wake the unit and switch inputs the moment it detects a digital signal, and you can customize that behavior along with automatic standby and display dimming for a setup that stays out of the way once configured.

Why the Hegel D50 Stands Out

Three Dedicated Master Clocks

Separate clocks for SPDIF and for USB at both 48k and 44.1k sample rates deliver a perfectly timed signal to the DAC chip.

Dual Isolated Toroidal Transformers

Separate power supplies for digital and analog sections, each steel-shielded and filtered, keep electrical noise out of the signal path.

Elevated DAC Chip Placement

Mounted on its own board above the rest of the electronics for short, unobstructed signal paths and reduced interference.

Comprehensive Digital Connectivity

AES/EBU, coaxial BNC and RCA, optical, and USB inputs cover virtually any digital source.

True Balanced and Single-Ended Outputs

Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs give you the flexibility to fit any system.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Digital Source Upgrader: Wants a dedicated DAC to pair with an existing preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
  • The Multi-Source Listener: Needs AES/EBU, coaxial, optical, and USB inputs to cover several digital sources at once.
  • The Detail-Focused Listener: Wants Hegel's lowest-noise DAC design for the cleanest possible digital-to-analog conversion.

How It Compares

If you'd rather have a dedicated CD source built around the same design philosophy, the Hegel Viking CD player shares the same chassis and connector layout.
