FiiO RR11 Portable FM Radio with USB DAC Mode

Overview

The FiiO RR11 is a pocket-sized portable stereo FM radio with a hand-turned tuning wheel, a retro look and a second life as a headphone amplifier for your phone or computer. Plug in the included earbuds, slide it to FM and roll the wheel until a station comes in, with a stereo indicator that lights when a stereo signal is detected. It's for anyone who wants real over-the-air radio without data, apps or a phone screen, in something small enough to carry everywhere.

A Silicon Labs Si4831 tuner covers three FM ranges: 87 to 108MHz for standard broadcasts, 76 to 90MHz for Japan and 64 to 87MHz for campus stations. The earphone cable doubles as the antenna, and a FiiO DDB custom analog chip handles the amplifier and the BASS+3D sound effect, with a switch for bass boost or bass boost plus 3D.

Switch to AMP mode and the included USB-C to USB-C cable connects the RR11 to a phone, player or computer, decoding up to 384kHz/32-bit and driving headphones from 8 to 100 ohms. A 300mAh battery runs over 8.5 hours on FM and over 17.5 hours in AMP mode, and the RR11 can be used while it charges, all in a slim aluminium-alloy body of about 46g.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

Because the earphone cable is the RR11's antenna, reception depends on it: keep the cord stretched out rather than bundled up when a station is weak. Turn the tuning wheel slowly, since the analog tuning rewards patience, and a light hiss between stations is normal FM behaviour rather than a fault. In AMP mode, mind which end of the included cable goes where, as FiiO notes the cable is directional; the gain in this mode is a modest 1.5x, so it's a clean, simple headphone output rather than a high-power amp. Any headphones with a 3.5mm plug will work.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The FM Radio Listener: Wants live radio without data or an app.
  • The Phone Listener: Wants a simple USB-C headphone output for a phone.
  • The Retro Gadget Fan: Wants a pocket radio with a real tuning wheel.

How It Compares

Compared with streaming radio through a phone app, the RR11 picks up stations over the air with no data plan, no app and no phone battery drain, and its analog wheel makes tuning a hands-on experience. Its AMP mode then adds a second use, giving a phone or computer a USB-C headphone output for wired earbuds or headphones.
