Klipsch R-40SA Dolby Atmos® Speakers

Overview

Overhead height effects are one of the most noticeable upgrades a home theatre can make, but most rooms aren't set up for in-ceiling speakers. The Klipsch R-40SA solves that without any drilling.

The R-40SA is a Dolby Atmos elevation speaker pairing a 1" aluminum LTS tweeter with a 90° x 90° Tractrix horn for crisp, controlled highs, and a 4" spun-copper TCP woofer for accurate midrange. A sealed acoustic suspension enclosure keeps bass tight and controlled in a compact cabinet.

It mounts on the wall via keyhole slots or sits directly on top of a compatible Klipsch floorstanding speaker, and includes jumper wires for a clean, direct connection to the R-800F or R-600F towers. Hidden fasteners, a low-profile magnetic grille, and built-in wire management keep the look tidy in either placement.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

For clients adding Atmos to an existing Central Ontario home theatre, the R-40SA's ability to sit directly on top of an R-800F or R-600F tower using the included jumper wires is the easiest path to real height effects — no extra wire run, no ceiling work, and it still looks intentional rather than bolted on.

Why the Klipsch R-40SA Stands Out

Dolby Atmos Elevation Effects

Adds genuine overhead height channels to a home theatre without in-ceiling installation.

Tractrix Horn-Loaded Tweeter

A 1" aluminum LTS tweeter on a 90° x 90° horn delivers detailed, controlled highs.

Spun-Copper TCP Woofer

A 4" woofer delivers accurate midrange with low distortion.

Sealed Acoustic Suspension Enclosure

Keeps bass tight and controlled in a compact cabinet.

Flexible Wall or Tower-Top Mounting

Keyhole wall mounting or direct top-mounting on compatible floorstanding speakers.

Included Jumper Wires for R-800F/R-600F

A clean, direct connection with no separate wire run needed on compatible towers.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Dolby Atmos Adopter: adding height channels to an existing 5.1 or 7.1 system.
  • The R-800F or R-600F Owner: gets a purpose-built match with included jumper wires.
  • The Flexible Installer: needs a speaker that works wall-mounted or stacked on existing towers.

How It Compares

The R-40SA shares its driver complement (1" LTS tweeter, 4" TCP woofer) with the R-40M bookshelf speaker, but trades the bass-reflex cabinet and larger footprint for a sealed enclosure and Atmos-specific mounting hardware built for this exact use case. If you're assembling a full Reference system, start with the R-40M for your main or surround channels and add the R-40SA once you're ready to bring overhead height effects into the room.

Klipsch R-40SA Dolby Atmos® Speakers FAQs

Can the Klipsch R-40SA speakers be used as standard surround speakers, or are they exclusively for Dolby Atmos height effects?

The Klipsch R-40SA speakers are versatile and can function both as Dolby Atmos height speakers and as standard surround speakers. This flexibility allows users to integrate them into various configurations within their home theater systems.

Is it possible to mount the R-40SA speakers on the ceiling for down-firing audio, and do they have a switch to toggle between up-firing and down-firing modes?

While the R-40SA speakers are primarily designed for up-firing Dolby Atmos applications, some users inquire about ceiling mounting for down-firing use. However, they do not feature a switch to toggle between up-firing and down-firing modes.

What is the recommended crossover setting on an AV receiver when using the R-40SA as side surround speakers?

When configuring the R-40SA speakers as side surrounds, setting the crossover at 80Hz is advisable. This setting ensures optimal performance and protects the speakers from potential damage due to low-frequency signals they aren't designed to handle.

Are the R-40SA speakers compatible with Klipsch floorstanding speakers for Dolby Atmos setups?

Yes. The R-40SA includes jumper wires for a direct, easy connection on top of Klipsch R-800F and R-600F floorstanding speakers, adding Dolby Atmos height effects without a separate wiring run.
