Yamaha R-S202 Natural Sound Stereo Receiver

Overview

Setting up a simple, reliable stereo system shouldn't require a stack of separate components. The Yamaha R-S202 puts an amplifier, an AM/FM tuner, and Bluetooth streaming in one box, so you can add real two-channel sound to a room without a complicated setup.

The R-S202 is a 2-channel stereo receiver from Yamaha's Natural Sound lineup, delivering 100W per channel (8 ohms, 40Hz-20kHz, 0.2% THD) and up to 140W + 140W of maximum power (8 ohms, 1kHz, 10% THD) for headroom on demanding passages. Four RCA analog inputs (CD, Line 1, Line 2, Line 3) connect a CD player and other line-level sources, and Bluetooth with SBC/AAC support lets you stream directly from a phone or tablet without any extra hardware.

An AM/FM tuner stores up to 40 favorite stations, and Bass/Treble tone controls (±10dB) let you shape the sound to the room. Speaker terminals for two systems (A/B) mean you can run a second set of speakers and switch between them from the front panel or remote, and a standby power draw of just 0.5W keeps it efficient when it's not in use.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

For clients in Central Ontario setting up a simple two-zone system — say, a living room and a back deck — the R-S202's A/B speaker selector is the easiest way to do it from one receiver, without adding a separate speaker switch box. Just keep in mind this is a Bluetooth-only receiver with no phono stage, so a turntable needs an external phono preamp before it can connect to one of the RCA line inputs.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The First-Time Stereo Owner: wants amplification, radio, and Bluetooth streaming in one simple box.
  • The Two-Zone Listener: running a second set of speakers off the same receiver with the A/B speaker selector.
  • The CD/Line-Level Collector: has a CD player or other line-level sources that just need a straightforward RCA hookup.

How It Compares

The R-S202 is Yamaha's entry point into 2-channel Hi-Fi, built for Bluetooth streaming and basic line-level sources without network connectivity. Stepping up to the Yamaha R-N600A Network Receiver in the same Hi-Fi lineup adds MusicCast wireless multi-room streaming, an ESS SABRE ES9010K2M DAC, a dedicated phono input for a turntable, and a subwoofer output — none of which the R-S202 includes. For a simple, no-frills stereo setup with Bluetooth, the R-S202 covers the basics; for streaming services, vinyl, and multi-room audio, the R-N600A is the better fit.
