FiiO Retro Box Desktop Bluetooth Speaker with DAP Dock
Overview
A dedicated digital audio player usually ends up propped against a book or a coffee mug when it's not in a pocket, with its screen facing the wrong way and no real amplification behind its own small drivers.
The FiiO Retro Box is a battery-powered desktop Bluetooth speaker built around a 2+2 acoustic design — two 40mm full-range drivers plus two passive radiators in separate side-firing chambers — and a built-in dock that holds a compatible FiiO digital audio player (JM21, M21, or M33 R2R) facing forward like a display stand. It plays over Bluetooth 6.0 with SBC and LDAC, or as a USB DAC over USB-C with no drivers needed, decoding up to 96kHz/32-bit.
A 360° rotary knob handles volume and, with a press, cycles through four sound presets — HiFi, Retro, Pop, and Warm — while the FiiO Control app adds custom EQ and codec switching. The built-in battery plays for about 10.5 hours over Bluetooth (SBC) and recharges in about 2.5 hours.
Simcoe Audio Video Insight
The mounting insert in the box is sized for FiiO's JM21 and M21 players specifically — if the plan is to dock an M33 R2R instead, it's worth confirming fit before assuming it will sit flush, since FiiO's own material doesn't spell out a separate insert for every compatible model. The Retro Box doesn't ship with a power adapter, so it charges from any existing USB-C charger capable of 5V/2A.

Why the FiiO Retro Box Stands Out
Built-In FiiO DAP Dock
Holds a compatible FiiO digital audio player (JM21, M21, or M33 R2R) facing forward, turning it into a display piece instead of a pocket device left face-down on a desk.
2+2 Acoustic Design
Two 40mm full-range drivers and two passive radiators sit in separate side-firing chambers for a wider listening sweet spot than a single small speaker.
Bluetooth 6.0 with LDAC
Streams over SBC or LDAC for higher-resolution Bluetooth playback than a standard SBC-only speaker.
Four Sound Presets on One Knob
A single 360° rotary knob controls volume, and a press cycles through HiFi, Retro, Pop, and Warm sound presets without opening an app.
USB DAC Mode
Connects over USB-C as a driverless USB DAC decoding up to 96kHz/32-bit, in addition to Bluetooth streaming.
Buyer's Guide
Who It's For
- The FiiO DAP Owner: already has a JM21, M21, or M33 R2R and wants a desktop dock with real amplification instead of the player's own small output.
- The Desk Listener: wants a compact Bluetooth speaker with LDAC support and a physical volume knob rather than app-only controls.
- The Retro Design Fan: likes FiiO's cassette-deck-inspired look across its Retro Products line and wants a matching desktop speaker.
How It Compares
The Retro Box is a smaller, battery-powered desktop speaker, distinct from FiiO's SA1 and SP5 active speaker pairs, which use wired stereo pairs with their own DACs and amplifiers for a full two-channel setup. The Retro Box trades that stereo separation for portability, a built-in battery, and the unique ability to dock a FiiO digital audio player directly into the speaker itself, which neither the SA1 nor the SP5 offers.
