Sony STRDH790 Dolby Atmos 4K 7.2 AV 145 watt Receiver
Overview
The Sony STR-DH790 is a 7.2-channel A/V receiver built around Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, giving you object-based overhead surround sound alongside 4K video passthrough for a complete home theatre upgrade.
Seven amplifier channels support up to 5.1.2 decoding, meaning you can run a 5.1 surround layout plus two height channels for Atmos effects without adding a separate amplifier.
Advanced D.C.A.C. calibration measures your room automatically with the included microphone, while four HDMI inputs and HDR passthrough (including Dolby Vision) keep your video quality intact from source to screen.
Simcoe Audio Video Insight
We recommend the STR-DH790 for anyone who wants real Dolby Atmos height channels on a moderate budget, since it steps up from Sony's standard 5.1-channel receivers without jumping all the way to a flagship model.

Why the Sony STR-DH790 Stands Out
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Decoding
Full decoding for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X brings object-based, three-dimensional surround sound to your home theatre, not just traditional channel-based surround.
7.2-Channel Amplification
Seven amplified channels plus dual subwoofer pre-outs give you the flexibility to build a 5.1.2 Atmos layout or a traditional 7.1 surround setup.
145-Watt Amplification
Rated at 145 watts into 6 ohms, the STR-DH790 has enough power for a wide range of bookshelf and floorstanding speakers across a full surround layout.
4K/60Hz HDMI Passthrough with HDR
Four HDMI inputs and one output support 4K at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma, HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision, so your picture quality carries through end to end.
Advanced D.C.A.C. Calibration
The included calibration microphone measures your room and adjusts each channel automatically, simplifying setup for a multi-channel Atmos system.
Bluetooth Receiver
Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream music wirelessly from a phone or tablet directly to your home theatre system.
Buyer's Guide
Who It's For
- The Atmos upgrader: Someone who wants real height-channel surround sound without stepping up to a flagship receiver.
- The home theatre builder: Someone assembling a 5.1.2 or 7.1-channel system who wants automatic room calibration.
- The 4K movie and gaming viewer: Someone who wants HDR passthrough, including Dolby Vision, across multiple HDMI sources.
How It Compares
The STR-DH790 adds Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding that the Sony STR-DH590 doesn't offer, at the same 145-watt power rating. Choose the STR-DH790 when you want height-channel Atmos sound, and the STR-DH590 if a straightforward 5.1-channel setup covers your needs.
