FiiO BTR17 Portable Bluetooth DAC and Headphone Amplifier

Overview

The FiiO BTR17 is FiiO's flagship portable Bluetooth DAC and headphone amplifier, built to drive serious headphones on the go and at your desk. A PC/BT/PHONE switch lets it work as a USB DAC for a computer, a Bluetooth receiver for your phone, or a wired dongle, and its patented Desktop Mode adds an external power input for up to 650mW per channel from the 4.4mm balanced output.

Inside are two ESS ES9069Q DACs, four THX AAA 78+ amplifiers in a fully balanced design, an XMOS XU316 USB receiver, and a Qualcomm QCC5181 Bluetooth chip. Bluetooth 5.4 covers aptX Lossless, LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, AAC, and SBC, and USB handles PCM up to 768kHz/32bit, native DSD512, and full MQA decoding.

A 1.3-inch colour IPS display and a physical volume knob make it easy to see and adjust, and the FiiO Control app adds 10-band PEQ. The aluminum body has a real leather back for a comfortable grip, and a leatherette case is included. Battery life runs about 8 to 9 hours over Bluetooth and about 9 to 10 hours as a phone dongle, depending on the output used.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The BTR17 makes the most sense if you own demanding balanced headphones and want one device for both your desk and your bag. Desktop Mode is the key feature. Flip the D.Mode switch and connect a 5V power supply to the orange power port to get the full 650mW per channel without draining your phone's battery. On battery alone, the balanced output still delivers up to 300mW per channel into 32 ohms, which covers most IEMs and portable headphones.
