Bryston 28B Cubed Mono Amplifier

Overview

The Bryston 28B Cubed (28B³) is a single-channel monoblock power amplifier that Bryston calls one of the most powerful amplifiers on the market, rated at 1000 watts into 8 ohms and up to 1800 watts into 4 ohms. Bryston says it can drive virtually any loudspeaker with total grace and ease, and ranks it among the finest sounding models it has made at any power output.

Bryston builds its amplifiers around a first-to-last-watt philosophy, where each product should sound equally good at every output level, and says no product demonstrates that better than the 28B³. It uses the patented Salomie input circuit found in all Cubed Series amplifiers, with Bryston rating distortion at under 0.005% (20Hz to 20kHz at rated power) and bandwidth from below 1Hz to 100kHz.

Balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs feed a fixed 29dB gain stage, and dual binding-post pairs make bi-wiring straightforward. It's fully convection cooled with no fans, draws under 500mW in standby, and a microprocessor-controlled SoftStart sequence brings it up without tripping circuit breakers.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

As a monoblock, the 28B³ is sold individually, so a stereo system needs two. Plan rack or floor space for each: Bryston lists 42 kg per unit and 8.1 inches of height, and the amps need clearance for convection cooling. Bryston's own advice is worth repeating: even if you don't need all that power, the 28B³ is worth hearing, and the DC trigger lets a pair power up with the rest of your system.

Why the Bryston 28B Cubed Stands Out

1000W Into 8 Ohms

Up to 1800 watts into 4 ohms from a single-channel amplifier.

First-to-Last-Watt Design

Bryston says no product demonstrates this philosophy better than the 28B³.

Salomie Input Circuit

The patented input stage used across Bryston's Cubed Series amplifiers.

Fanless Convection Cooling

Fully convection cooled, with no noisy fans.

Dual Binding-Post Pairs

Two output pairs for straightforward bi-wiring.

SoftStart and DC Trigger

A microprocessor-controlled start-up that won't trip breakers, plus a DC trigger for automated on and off.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Demanding-Speaker Owner: Needs maximum power and control for large or difficult loudspeakers.
  • The Monoblock Purist: Wants a dedicated amplifier for each speaker.
  • The Integrated System Builder: Wants XLR inputs and trigger control for an automated system.

How It Compares

At 1000W into 8 ohms, the 28B³ has the highest per-channel output of the Cubed Series amplifiers Bryston currently lists. The 7B³ monoblock delivers 600W into 8 ohms, and the 14B³ offers 600W per channel in a two-channel, dual-mono chassis.
