Bowers & Wilkins M-1 Compact Satellite Speaker (Each)

Overview

The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 is a compact satellite speaker for rooms where a full-size cabinet won't fit. B&W says it's equally suited to multi-channel or stereo sound, is an outstanding listen with or without a subwoofer, and comes complete with a wall bracket and table stand.

It's a 2-way vented-box design with a Nautilus tube-loaded aluminium dome tweeter and a 4-inch woven glass fibre cone bass/midrange driver, crossing over at 4kHz. Add a Bowers & Wilkins subwoofer for a full home theatre system, or, as B&W notes, use a pair on their own for two-channel listening thanks to the M-1's more extended bass response.

The swivelling multi-position foot lets the M-1 sit on a shelf or table, the included bracket handles wall mounting, and the optional FS-M-1 floor stand brings it up to listening height. The cabinet has a matching perforated steel grille.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

The M-1 is at its best where a larger speaker would be a compromise: surrounds in a living room, a discreet front stage under a wall-mounted TV, or a small stereo pair in an office. B&W's manual suggests keeping the left and right speakers close to the height of the screen's centre, starting about 0.5 m (20 in) from the sides of the screen and experimenting before fixing them in place. Plan your wire runs early if you're wall mounting.

A swivelling multi-position foot for shelves and tables, plus a bracket for wall mounting.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Discreet Home Theatre: Wants surround or front speakers that don't dominate the room.
  • The Wall-Mount Install: Wants a small speaker with the wall bracket already in the box.
  • The Compact Stereo Listener: Wants a small two-channel pair for an office or secondary room.

How It Compares

The M-1 is built around flexibility and size: it's 248 mm tall on its table stand, weighs 2.3 kg, and includes both a wall bracket and table stand. If you have room for a full stand-mount cabinet and want a larger speaker, the 600 Series 606 S3 is the next step, typically placed on a dedicated FS-600 S3 stand.
