Arcam rPhono Phono Preamplifier for Moving Magnet & Moving Coil Cartridges

Overview

A turntable needs a proper phono stage to sound its best, and many amplifiers and receivers either don't have one or include a basic stage that can't be adjusted for your cartridge. The Arcam rPhono is a dedicated phono preamplifier that adds that stage, with separate gain and loading settings for moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges.

Moving coil users get precision impedance matching from 50 to 550Ω using trimmers rather than fixed steps, while moving magnet users can choose from four input capacitance settings (120, 220, 340, or 440pF). Four gain settings for each cartridge type cover a wide range of output levels, and a selectable low-frequency rumble filter reduces the effects of warped or irregular pressings.

Inside, a multi-layer PCB with a high-quality ground plane and multiple low-noise, individually regulated power supplies keep the signal clean on its way to the output stage, with precision RIAA response for accurate tonal balance. It all sits in a compact cast aluminum case that runs from an external 12V DC power supply.

Simcoe Audio Video Insight

For anyone running a turntable through a receiver or amplifier with a basic (or missing) phono stage, the rPhono is a practical fix. Because it handles both MM and MC cartridges with proper gain and loading adjustment for each, it suits a first turntable as well as a higher-end moving coil setup, and its compact size means it can sit on a shelf without adding another full-size component to the rack. Arcam has since moved the rPhono to its discontinued list, so it's worth checking availability with us.

Why the Arcam rPhono Stands Out

MM & MC Cartridge Support

Separate gain and loading settings let the rPhono match both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, not just one type.

Four Input Capacitance Settings

Select 120, 220, 340, or 440pF (with 47kΩ) to set the correct loading for your moving magnet cartridge.

Variable Moving Coil Impedance

Trimmers adjust MC loading from 50 to 550Ω, rather than relying on fixed steps.

Four Gain Settings Per Cartridge Type

60, 70, 80, or 82dB for MC and 30, 40, 50, or 52dB for MM suit a wide range of cartridge output levels.

Selectable Rumble Filter

Reduces very low-frequency noise from warped or irregular pressings, rolling off to -13dB at 10Hz when switched on.

Multi-Layer PCB Ground Plane

A multi-layer circuit board maximizes the quality of the ground plane to reduce interference between components.

Individually Regulated Power Supplies

Multiple low-noise, individually regulated supplies feed a clean signal to the output stage.

Buyer's Guide

Who It's For

  • The Turntable Starter: Has an amplifier or receiver without a phono input, or with a built-in stage that can't be adjusted.
  • The Moving Coil Listener: Uses an MC cartridge and wants precise impedance matching rather than fixed loading steps.
  • The Space-Conscious Vinyl Fan: Wants a compact, shelf-friendly phono stage with low-noise performance and accurate RIAA response.

How It Compares

Compared with a fixed-setting phono input, the rPhono gives moving magnet and moving coil cartridges their own adjustable gain (four settings each) and loading (variable 50 to 550Ω for MC, four capacitance values for MM). That makes it the better match whenever your cartridge's requirements are more specific than a one-size-fits-all built-in stage allows.

Arcam rPhono Phono Preamplifier for Moving Magnet & Moving Coil Cartridges FAQs

Does it include RIAA equalisation?

Yes. The rPhono applies precision RIAA equalization, with a rated frequency response of 20Hz to 50kHz (±0.2dB) when the rumble filter is off.

Can I adjust it for different cartridges?

Yes. Moving coil cartridges get four gain settings (60, 70, 80, or 82dB) and variable impedance from 50 to 550Ω. Moving magnet cartridges get four gain settings (30, 40, 50, or 52dB) and four capacitance options (120, 220, 340, or 440pF). A trim tool is included.

How does the rPhono keep noise low?

Arcam uses a multi-layer circuit board with a high-quality ground plane to reduce interference between components, plus multiple low-noise, individually regulated power supplies. Rated equivalent noise is 0.06μV RMS on the MC input and 0.5μV RMS on the MM input (A-weighted).

What’s the power source?

It runs from an external 12V DC power supply (2.0A maximum), which comes with interchangeable plugs.
